Guidance & Honest Answers
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything families most often ask us about pet cremation and aftercare — answered plainly, the way we'd answer on the phone.
Arranging Care
Beginning the Process
Do we need an appointment before calling you?
No appointment is ever needed. Call the moment you need us — or days ahead, if you're preparing for a scheduled euthanasia. We arrange everything in that one conversation, at whatever pace feels right to you.
Can our veterinarian arrange everything on our behalf?
Yes. Many families simply tell their vet, "We'd like Family First Animal Aftercare," and we handle the rest directly with the clinic. You're welcome to call us yourself as well — some families find that conversation comforting.
Can we plan ahead for a pet who is declining?
Please do — it genuinely helps. Pre-planning lets you make calm decisions about private or communal cremation and keepsakes before the hardest day arrives, so that when it comes, one phone call sets everything gently in motion.
What information will you need when we call?
Just the essentials: your pet's name, species and approximate weight, where they are now, and how to reach you. From those few details we can quote your exact price and arrange the pickup — the call usually takes only minutes.
The Cremation Itself
How Your Pet Is Cared For
What is the difference between private and communal cremation?
In a private cremation your pet is cremated entirely alone and their ashes are returned to you. In a communal cremation, pets are cremated together and ashes are respectfully scattered rather than returned. We'll help you choose without pressure.
Can a blanket, collar, or toy stay with our pet?
Yes. Many families send a favorite blanket or small toy along, and we will keep it with your pet exactly as you wish. If you'd rather keep the collar at home as a memento, we'll return it to you at pickup.
Do you provide aftercare for birds, rabbits, and exotic pets?
We do. Rabbits, birds, guinea pigs, hamsters, reptiles, and other small companions receive the same gentle care as any dog or cat, with pricing scaled to their size. Every member of the family is welcome here.
How soon after pickup is the cremation performed?
Your pet is kept in a clean, cool, respectful environment and cremated promptly — typically within a few days. Your pet is never left waiting in an undignified condition, and we can share timing specifics whenever you ask.
Returning Home
Receiving Your Pet's Ashes
How will we know when our pet is ready to come home?
We call you. You'll hear from us when the cremation is complete and again to arrange the hand delivery — a scheduled time at your door, not a tracking number. You are never left wondering where your companion is.
What do a pet's cremated remains look like?
Cremated remains are a soft, pale ash with a fine, sand-like texture. They come home sealed inside the urn or vessel you've chosen, so you may keep them exactly as delivered or transfer them whenever your family wishes.
May we scatter our pet's ashes in California?
Generally yes — on your own property, or on private land with the owner's permission. Many families scatter a portion somewhere meaningful and keep the rest at home in an urn. We're glad to talk through ideas with you.
Do you provide a certificate of cremation?
Yes — every private cremation includes a certificate recording your pet's name and the date their cremation was completed. It comes home alongside the urn, in the same hand-delivered presentation.
Costs & Practical Matters
Honest Answers About Pricing
Why is pet cremation priced by weight?
A larger animal requires more time and resources to cremate with proper care, so weight is the fairest measure. It also means your price is objective — quoted completely over the phone, before you ever commit to anything.
Are nights, weekends, and holidays really no extra charge?
Really. The price we quote is the same at midnight on a holiday as it is on a weekday afternoon. Grief doesn't choose convenient hours, and we don't believe in charging families more for that.
Are there any fees that could surprise us later?
No. The quote you receive on the phone covers pickup, the cremation you chose, and the return of ashes where applicable. If you add a keepsake or upgrade an urn, we'll tell you the exact difference before you decide.
Can our pet's ashes be divided among family members?
Yes. We can divide ashes among several small urns or keepsake vessels so that children, parents, or households who shared the same beloved companion may each keep a part of them close. Just mention it when we speak.
